The modernization of the port in the Turkish province of Izmir will be fully completed in 2024, the country’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend.
According to the ministry, the modernization work started in 2014.
The total value of the port’s modernization is over 1.7 billion Turkish liras ($200 million).
Last year, more than 12.3 billion Turkish liras ($1.4 billion) were allocated for this purpose, the ministry said.
Until the end of 2021, 18 billion Turkish liras ($2.15 billion) will be spent on the port’s modernization, added the ministry.
A total of over 3.6 million tons of cargo have been transported via the Turkish Izmir port over the first six months of 2021.
In the reporting period 217,173 tons of cargo were transported through the port by ships flying the Turkish flag, and over 3.4 million tons – by ships flying the flags of other countries.
From January through June 2021, the port of Izmir has handled 22 tons of transit cargo.
Work is underway on implementation of 469 transport and infrastructural projects in Turkey with a total value of more than 694.7 billion Turkish liras ($81.09 billion), of which 179 billion liras ($20.8 billion) came from foreign loans.
Implementation of some of these projects began in previous years.
In 2021, 42.4 billion Turkish liras ($4.9 billion) will be allocated for implementing transport and infrastructure projects in Turkey, 5.9 billion liras ($690 million) of which will fall on foreign loans.
In 2020, over 282.7 billion Turkish liras ($33 billion) were allocated for the implementation of transport and infrastructure projects in Turkey, 56.85 billion liras ($6.64 billion) of which accounted for the foreign loans.
