Georgia's chances to join NATO are very little, because of the August events of last year, the Democratic movement -United Georgia Party Leader, ex-Speaker of Georgian Parliament Nino Burjanadze said.
Burjanadze commented the NATO summit in Strasburg and communiqué, which confirms that Georgia and Ukraine will become NATO members.
"Unfortunately, our chances to join NATO in the near future are very little," said Burjanadze. However, she noted that it is very important for Georgia that the NATO summit has officially confirmed that the doors of the Alliance remain open for Georgia.
"But we have to work a lot in order to achieve NATO standards. We are waiting for a hard and difficult work", said Burjanadze.
During the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels on Dec. 2-3, the Alliance participating countries found Tbilisi was not ready to receive of NATO candidate member status and postponed the Action Plan for the membership to NATO for an indefinite period. Georgia's first application to the MAP had been rejected at the NATO summit in Bucharest in April 2008. Then it was discussed that the country will become a member of the alliance in the future.
