Azerbaijani Press Council carries out monitoring of newspapers published on behalf of Parliament. "A new investigation is being conducted with regards to newspapers that are printed on behalf of Parliament, and if any violation is found in their activities, relevant measures will be taken," the chairman of the Press Council Aflatun Amashov told Trend .
More than 3,300 media outlets were registered in Azerbaijan. Currently only 600 of them function. Nearly 400 newspapers and magazines are published and more than 20 television channels function. There are about 50 electronic media outlets, 20 news agencies, and the rest are the Internet resources in Azerbaijan.
According to Amashov, publishing newspaper on behalf of the Parliament without the permission of the relevant structures of the Parliament is itself illegal.
"This provision found its reflection in the additions and changes to the Law on Mass Media," said the chairman of the Council. According to him, it is commendable that the leadership of the press service of the parliament pays attention to this issue. "I think that as a result of mutual cooperation, we can solve this problem," said Amashov.
According to the chairman of the Council, after investigation upon appeal of the press service of the Parliament, two newspapers were included in the list of "racketeering" newspapers. "The fact that several newspapers acts on behalf of Parliament is known to us. Currently these newspapers are being monitored and soon serious decisions will be made with regards to them," he said.
At a press conference held last week, the head of press service of the Parliament Akif Tavakkuloglu said that up to now, upon their appeal, the Press Council included in the list of "racketeering" newspapers the newspapers "Parlament sədası" (Parliament's sound) and "Azərbaycan parlamenti "(Azerbaijani parliament).
According to Tavakkuloglu, despite this, seven newspapers are being published on behalf of Parliament. According to him, the newspapers "Parlamentin səsi" (Voice of Parliament), "Parlament - 2005" (Parliament - 2005), "Parlament xəbərləri" (Parliament news), "Parlament və cəmiyyət" (Parliament and society), "Parlament" (Parliament ), "Milət vəkili" (MP) and "Deputatın tribunası" (Tribune of MPs) have no relation to the Parliament.
Until now, the Press Council included in the "black list" 94 papers dealing with "racketeering".
