BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 19. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide $1.5 million to Kyrgyzstan to assist it in responding to the global food crisis, Trend reports citing the USAID's press service.

USAID will improve nutrition for children under the age of five and young mothers in Kyrgyzstan as part of the recently announced $2.76 billion in US government funding to address the global food crisis.

The agency underlined that these groups are the most vulnerable to the escalating food crisis, exacerbated by the situation in Ukraine.

“We know that food security is the highest priority for the Kyrgyz Government. USAID is supporting these efforts by helping preserve food and protect the most vulnerable populations like women and children from the effects of rising food prices” says Kaya Adams, USAID/Kyrgyzstan Mission Director.

The new USAID funding will be directed to programs to improve food storage and logistics facilities in the Osh, Jalal-Abad, and Batken Regions, which will create jobs as well as serve as a new market for selling fruits and vegetables, extending the selling season.
