Baku, Azerbaijan, June 18. The World Food Programme (WFP) held a roundtable meeting in Tajikistan's Guliston town to discuss the national food fortification law, Trend reports via press service of WFP.
The roundtable marked the start of a series of conversations around wheat fortification in Tajikistan. Notably, Tajik Wheat Flour Mill "Ordi Dushanbe" launched Tajikistan's first wheat flour fortification with imported premix in May 2022.
According to WFP Representative and Country Director in Tajikistan Adham Musallam, food fortification is a great investment that governments can make to combat malnutrition and improve food security and nutrition, which is one of the four strategic goals in the Tajik Government's National Development Strategy 2030.
"WFP is committed to supporting food fortification through technical support to the Government to strengthen the health system and work with wheat flour mills and relevant ministries and departments to promote healthy diets," Musallam added.
Remarkably, WFP is the only organization that supplies fortified wheat flour and vegetable oil to Tajikistan. Some 440,000 primary students in 2,000 schools receive daily hot meals made with these nutritional ingredients as part of the National School Feeding Program.
