Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi has discredited himself by unleashing the army against his opponents and must step down, the foreign ministers of the European Union's most influential states said Thursday, dpa reported.
Gaddafi has "discredited himself: he has to go," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said as he arrived in Brussels for emergency talks on Libya with EU colleagues, one day ahead of an emergency EU summit on the same issue.
His German counterpart, Guido Westerwelle, said that "a man who launches a civil war against his own people is finished."
According to draft papers, Friday's summit is due to call for Gaddafi to step down. Foreign ministers were due to debate the papers at their meeting.
"We continue to be appalled by the levels of violence in Libya and to call on Gaddafi to leave and his regime to end the violence against their own people," British Foreign Minister William Hague said.
