More than 100 Jordanian intellectuals on Saturday condemned what they called the "brutal" oppression of pro-democracy protesters by the Syrian regime, dpa reported.
"We condemn the brutal and bloody quelling of the people by the Syrian regime," said the signatories of a joint statement who included journalists, writers, academics and rights activists.
"We are sad to see the blood of our Syrian brethren being shed without mercy by a regime which we considered for a long time as a Pan-Arab and liberal regime that supported the resistance" against Israel, they added.
More than 400 people have reportedly been killed over the past six weeks of Syrian demonstrations.
