The German Foreign Office is to expel a senior Libyan diplomat, a spokeswoman said Sunday, confirming a media report without naming the individual, DPA reported.
After "careful examination," the diplomat had been declared persona non grata in Germany, the spokeswoman said. She did not explain what had prompted the decision.
Focus news magazine reported that he had been appointed as recently as July 22 as an authorized charge d'affaires in Libya's Berlin embassy.
A lawyer for the diplomat has objected to his planned expulsion, Focus wrote, arguing that this would return him to a country engaged in civil war, along with his wife and two young children.
