Iran exported 140,000 tons of pistachio in the current Iranian calendar year, which began March 20,2012, Mohsen Jalalpour, the head of the association Iranian pistachio farmers, said on Monday.
The amount shows 40 percent increase compared to its preceding year, the ISNA News Agency quoted Jalapour as saying.
Iran totally produced 183,000 tons of pistachio in the current year, which is 15 percent more than previous year, he added.
Pistachio is currently being sold at the price of 10-11 dollars per kilo in the global markets, so considering the price of US dollar in the free market (around 36,700 rials), we can say that the real price of pistachio should be around 380,000-400,000 rials in domestic markets, he explained.
Pistachio is currently being offered at the price of 300,000 rials (some $8 based on the USD price in the free market) in certain shops, Jalapour said.
Iran banned exports of pistachio last month in a bid to curb rising prices in the domestic market.
Iranian First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi had ordered stopping pistachio exports for 6 months in order to help regulate the prices, the Fars News Agency reported.
But it was announced a week later that the ban has been lifted.
