Industry experts expect annual exports of hazelnuts worth $150-200 million in the near future, Trend reports referring to Market Analysis Azerbaijan 2019.
In 2017 exports rose by 30 percent to 20,800 tons compared with 2016. In the first half of 2018, exports increased by 34 percent to 6,700 tons, according to Market Analysis Azerbaijan 2019.
Hazelnuts rank second among the products being exported by Azerbaijan after oil and gas products.
The production of hazelnuts is significant in the Azerbaijani economy.
Several types of hazelnuts are cultivated in Azerbaijan. Among them are atababa, ashrafli, ghalib, ganja, sachagli, topgara and yagli. Most of the country's hazelnut orchards are located in the foothills of the Caucasus mountains in Gakh, Zagatala and Balaken districts.
In 2016, Ferrero, the world's biggest buyer of hazelnuts, began to purchase a big number of types of hazelnuts grown in Azerbaijan.
In 2017, 45,500 tons of hazelnuts were produced in Azerbaijan, which is 32.9 percent more than in 2016.
