Iran’s largest auto manufacturer, Iran Khodro Company (IKCO), teamed up with Germany’s MAHLE GmbH and Austria’s AVL, has designed and manufactured a turbo straight-three engine for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, a report said.
The serious problem of air pollution in Tehran and other big cities has prompted Iran Khodro to design and manufacture engines for green vehicles, according to the report carried by Khodronevis news portal on June 23.
The inline-triple has been developed by Iran Khodro in cooperation with MAHLE GmbH and AVL engineering companies beyond the prototype stage with a mark one version now in operation.
The report added that the 1.2-liter engine has been built based on the world’s latest models and technology and can installed on electric cars.
The introduction of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles known as PHEVs into the Iranian market requires a series of adjustment work, where a network of rapid-charging stations has to be built.
However, PHEVs which employ both conventional engines and electric motors can be charged at home.
Iran's second-largest carmaker, SAIPA, introduced its petrol engine to Iran’s market in 2017 and it seems that the motor will find its way to the market sooner than Iran Khodro’s model as electric cars are not yet rife in the country.
