Georgia’s Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development in cooperation with German Development Bank (KfW) and the EU has launched another technical cooperation program to support energy sector reform, Trend reports via the press service of the Ministry.
The total budget of the Georgia's Energy Sector Reform Program (GESRP) amounted to 8.44 million euros.
The program aims to strengthen Georgia’s energy security in accordance with the EU practices, and to improve the energy efficiency of public, industrial and residential buildings and related infrastructure.
The 4-year program will help Georgia attract additional private investments, develop renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, develop a competitive electricity market, and raise public awareness of the energy sector reforms.
According to Sigrid Brettel, the Head of Cooperation of the EU Delegation to Georgia, the EU expects the project to be successful.
“Energy efficiency is a key principle of the EU policy, which contributes to the country's energy security as well as to the sustainable development. We hope Georgia will be able to meet its obligations under the National Energy Efficiency Framework Agreement,” said Brettel.
Within the framework of the project, secondary legislation on energy efficiency envisaged by the Georgian legal framework will be developed, European energy efficiency standards will be brought in line with the Georgia's nvironment.
Energy auditor certification and inspection system will be established to implement the audit mechanism, an energy efficient procurement system will be introduced, public buildings will be inventoried, and a long-term renovation strategy will be developed.
“The introduction and implementation of the energy efficiency and renewable energy legislation will help Georgia reduce imports through the rational consumption of energy resources,” said the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia David Tvalabeishvili.
