Merkel and Clinton agree that Gaddafi must go

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday she agreed with US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton that Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi must be removed, DPA reported.

"It's an objective we are united about," said Merkel after they met at the chancellery in Berlin.

Clinton was in Germany for a conference of NATO foreign ministers. Neither mentioned how the current NATO military operations against Gaddafi might be expanded.

Germany has dissociated itself from the NATO operation. It abstained in a UN Security Council vote last month to impose the no-fly zone that is the legal basis for the NATO intervention.

"We will be speaking about how military capabilities can be employed, but also about how a political process can be employed," Merkel said.
