Bomb scare closes New York bridge

New York City's police closed the Robert F Kennedy Bridge for around two hours late Wednesday after an abandoned truck raised fears of a possible bomb attack, DPA reported.

The city authorities called to the scene determined that the vehicle did not present a threat, a report by broadcaster CNN said.

The driver got out and fled on foot, leaving the truck with Arizona numberplates by the toll booth in the direction from the Bronx to Manhattan, witnesses told the New York Times.

A bomb disposal squad was dispatched after bridge workers reported a strong smell of petrol, but an inspection of the truck, which bore numberplates from Arizona state, revealed nothing suspicious.

The incident followed an attempted car-bombing in New York City's Times Square late Saturday. Police cleared the crowded square when a smoking vehicle was found to contain a device made of propane canisters and petrol cans. The device did not detonate and no one was injured.

A Pakistani-born US citizen, Faisal Shahzad, was arrested in connection with the Times Square incident earlier this week as he was trying to leave the John F Kennedy Airport on a flight bound for Dubai.
