Azerbaijani youth organizations appealed to Turkish youth organizations to prevent the opening of the Turkish-Armenian borders.
"Azerbaijan is concerned with the information about the opening of borders. We asked our Turkish colleagues to prevent the opening of borders," the World Union of Young Turkish Writers Head Akbar Goshali said.
Turkish President Abdullah Gul visited Yerevan on Sept. 6, 2008 upon the invitation of his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sarkisyan to watch an Armenia-Turkey football match.

Representatives of Turkish society believe that the borders with Armenia will be opened.
"Turkey and Azerbaijan have always been together. The relations between the peoples are very strong, and no one can shatter them. Therefore, the Armenian-Turkish borders will not be opened until the liberation of Karabakh," the Public Union Irali Head Ceyhun Osmanli said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
