BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 24. A great friend of Azerbaijan, former UNESCO Director General Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow has passed away, Trend reports via Azerbaijan's National Commission for UNESCO.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of UNESCO Director General (1974-1987) Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow. We remember with excitement his visit to Azerbaijan in 1983. He was a true friend of Azerbaijan. We express our sincere condolences to the Senegalese people,” the statement of the Commission reads.
To note, Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow visited Baku in 1983 at the invitation of Azerbaijan's National Leader Heydar Aliyev. The carpet made by Latif Karimov with the image of Nizami, which was presented to him by National Leader Heydar Aliyev, still hangs in the UNESCO headquarters.
