BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 17. Iran’s crude steel consumption dropped by 10.2 percent in the first two months of the current Iranian calendar year (from March 21 through May 21, 2025), compared to the same period last year (from March 20 through May 20, 2024).
Data obtained by Trend from the Iranian Steel Producers Association indicates that crude steel consumption stood at 5.04 million tons, down from 5.61 million tons in the previous year.
Meanwhile, the consumption of finished steel products also declined, totaling 3.37 million tons, which marks an 8.1 percent decrease from 3.67 million tons in the same period last year.
However, the report also notes a positive shift in the demand for sponge iron. Over the two months, 7.7 million tons of sponge iron were consumed in Iran, representing a 4.2 percent increase from 7.4 million tons a year earlier.
The report highlights that Iran’s steel production capacity stands at around 40 million tons annually. Authorities say efforts are underway to expand this potential further.
