Japanese Government decided to issue a grant worth $6.9 million to Kyrgyzstan for reconstruction of bridges in the Chui region, the Japanese Embassy in Bishkek said.
Kyrgyzstan Finance Ministry will host signing of notes between Japanese Charge d'Affaires to Kyrgyzstan Yuuiti Iizuka and Kyrgyz Finance Minister Marat Sultanov on Feb. 19.
Japan International Cooperation Agency Permanent Representative to Kyrgyzstan Hideaki Maruyama and Marat Sultanov will sign a grant agreement that defines procedures for further implementation of the project.
As part of the project, three bridges in the Chui region will be reconstructed: the Alamedin bridge (42 meters), the Alaarcha bridge (30 meters) and the Kenbulun bridge (25 meters).
Bridges Alaarcha and Alamedin are on the Asian Highway number 5 connecting Bishkek and Almaty. Transport traffic across the bridges is roughly 14,000 and 8,000 cars per day respectively. The Kenbulun bridge is located on the Asian Highway number 61 running to China. The bridge is important for local residents and the entire region (transport turnover is roughly 9,000 cars per day).
The bridges were constructed over 40 years ago. Today they are in very dangerous state and may collapse. Japan is convinced that reconstruction of these bridges will improve road safety, strengthen interregional transport links, develop economy and improve living conditions of the population.
Tokyo believes that transport sector is one of the most important for Kyrgyzstan. Japan is doing what it can to help develop this sector. So far, the country has implemented projects to upgrade roads Bishkek-Osh, Bishkek-Naryn, a project to modernize the Manas airport, etc.
Kyrgyzstan is an important partner of Japan. Since Kazakhstan gained independence it has been making efforts to promote democracy and transition to a market economy. Tokyo's assistance contributes to further strengthening friendly diplomatic relations between the two countries.
To date, Japan has allotted $480 million of assistance to Kazakhstan.
Japanese Government intends to continue supporting reforms in Kyrgyzstan to improve living conditions, the Japanese Embassy said in a message.
