World Bank Grants Big Loan for Ecological Rehabilitation of Azerbaijani Absheron Peninsular

Azerbaijan, Baku, 18 June / Trend / The World Bank has granted a total of $164mln to realize three projects aiming at the ecological rehabilitation of the Absheron Peninsular of Azerbaijan, the report posted on the website of the Bank said.

The projects will enable to clean oil-field territories, to decontaminate two facilities where iodine was produced earlier and to create storage for the radioactive materials and to update system of collection and utilization of wastes and solid wastes in Baku.

The ecological program of Baku is subdivided into three following projects: project to clean contaminated areas (loan worth $74.6mln), large-scale project to clean land from oil pollution ($60mln) and project to integrate management of solid wastes ($29.5mln).

These three projects make up the first phase of the ecological program of Absheron, which aims to expand Azerbaijan's opportunities to address a number of ecological problems and to increase knowledge of its population in this regard.
