The main challenge with drilling in the Caspian Sea is of course to get access to a landlocked ocean, Maersk Drilling, a drilling rig operator based in Copenhagen, Denmark, told Trend.
“Maersk Explorer is our only rig operating in the Caspian Sea. The Maersk Explorer semi-submersible rig is contracted to BP offshore Azerbaijan for Shah Deniz project until 13th May 2021,” said the company.
Maersk Drilling, said the Caspian Sea can be challenging to operate in due to recurring strong winds, volatile weather, and a sometimes tricky seabed which can make it hard to maintain stability at the ocean floor.
“In Maersk Drilling, we pride ourselves of our heritage in the ultra-harsh North Sea environment, and we have been able to successfully export the skills and competencies built there to perform successful drilling operations under challenging conditions all over the globe,” said the company.
Aside from Maersk Explorer, Istiglal rig is also engaged in drilling on Shah Deniz field. Istiglal rig carries out drilling of wells to a certain depth, after which well completion is conducted by Maersk Explorer.
Earlier, the company told Trend that it is interested in engaging its rig further offshore Azerbaijan after the contract on Shah Deniz ends.
