The Georgian Railway maintains the trend of increasing freight traffic, Trend reports via the Georgian Railway.
For 8 months of 2020, 7.15 million tons of cargo were transported by rail, which is 4.5 percent more than in the previous 8 months. Domestic and export cargo slightly decreased, although there is an increase in imports and transit.
Some 1.93 million tons of oil products were transported by rail, a decrease is observed in grain and sugar. The share of cast iron and manganese increased and exceeded 376,000 tons, the share of fertilizers increased. Up to 687,000 tons of fertilizers were transported along the Georgian corridor.
Despite the increase in the amount of cargo, the revenues of the railways decreased. Income from cargo turnover for 6 months of 2020 amounted to 58.9 million laris ($18.2 million), which is 0.3 percent less than revenue from cargo transportation for 6 months of last year.
Meanwhile, Georgia plans to stimulate container transportation. At the autumn session of parliament, it is planned to adopt a law according to which a multimodal shipping scheme will be created.
