Iranian Judiciary: 8 Slovaks, one Iranian detained for spying

The spokesman of Iran Judiciary System Mohsen Ejei said that eight Slovaks, alongside an Iranian citizen were accused of espionage and detained, Mehr News Agency reported on July 1. He said that these people imported illegal equipment into the country and took photos and films from Iran’s sensitive entities around Isfahan province. He said that Slovak ambassador to Tehran has met with them after detention.

The spokesman of Iran Judiciary System Mohsen Ejei said that eight Slovaks, alongside an Iranian citizen were accused of espionage and detained, Mehr News Agency reported on July 1. He said that these people imported illegal equipment into the country and took photos and films from Iran's sensitive entities around Isfahan province. He said that Slovak ambassador to Tehran has met with them after detention.

Before, the spokesman of Iran Foreign Ministry Abbas Aragchi confirmed the detention of seven Slovak citizens who arrived in Iran as tourists and behaved inappropriately.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia has been informed about the detention of its citizens, Araghchi said.

Earlier, head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said that the Slovak citizens were being detained for carrying special devices.

The Slovak citizens also visited several strategically important sites in Iran, head of the commission added.

In December 2012, Iranian TV aired a documentary titled "Hunter in a Trap" about Iranian intelligence services revealing and capturing CIA spies in the country, the Young Journalist's Club website reported.

The documentary features a man, who calls himself "Matthew Waluk" from Slovakia, that describes how the operation was set up.

In February 2013 "Matthew Waluk" was released and sent back to Slovakia.
