Qatar's official news agency says a Qatari man has been released from the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay and has returned home, the AP reported.

The news agency says Jaralla Saleh Mohammed Kahla al-Marri returned to the Qatari capital, Doha, on Sunday after being released from the detention center in Cuba. It did not say what date he was released.

Al-Marri was detained by American soldiers in Afghanistan in 2001 on suspicion of links to the Taliban and al-Qaida. But, the agency says, no charges were ever brought against him.

About 270 prisoners remain at Guantanamo. But the future of the detention center has been in doubt since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last month that detainees have the right to challenge their imprisonment in U.S. courts.
