Embattled Ivory Coast leader Laurent Gbagbo has fled his Abidjan compound and is nowhere to be found, France's ambassador to Ivory Coast was quoted by French public radio as saying Friday.
Ambassador Jean-Marc Simon said that Gbagbo was neither in his residence or at the presidential palace and that his whereabouts was unknown, DPA reported.
French magazine Jeune Afrique had earlier reported that forces loyal to Gbagbo's rival Alassane Ouattara, recognized by the international community as the country's rightful president, took control of the presidential compound in the middle of the night and found it had been vacated by Gbagbo, a his wife and aides.
