As OSCE chair, Greece backs peacefully resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Greek Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ioannis Metaxas told reporters.

Greece assumed the OSCE chairmanship on Jan. 1.

"Everyone is aware of Greece's position and policy on the conflict's resolution. Athens supports complying with international laws to resolve the conflict. Greece has its own views on the issue. We will not change them," Metaxas said.

Greece backs the OSCE Minsk Group's activity and has an impartial approach towards the conflicting sides, he said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
