Russia's Maxim Opalev finally made it to the top of the Olympic medal podium Saturday when he won the men's C1 500- metre canoe race at the third attempt, dpa reported.

Meanwhile in the K1 500m, Ken Wallace of Australia took gold in the men's event while Inna Osypenko-Radomska of Ukraine prevailed in the women's race.

Spain's Saul Craviotto and Carlos Perez just about held on to win the men's K2 500m race ahead of Ronald Rauhe and Tim Weiskotter of Germany with Belarus pair Raman Piatrushenka and Vadzim Makhneu taking bronze.

The 29-year-old Volgograd native Opalev, who managed bronze in the event in Athens four years ago and silver at Sydney 2000, finally claimed gold at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park in a time of 1 minute 47.140 seconds.

Spain's David Cal had to settle for silver just as in Athens while Iurii Cheban of Ukraine took bronze.

Australia's Ken Wallace trailed defending Olympic champion Adam van Koeverden of Canada at the halfway stage but finished the stronger to claim victory in a time of 1:37.252 minutes.

Great Britain's Tim Brabants, winner of Friday's K1 1,000m race, had to be satisfied with bronze.

"Adam's one of those really, really tough guys. You give him an inch and he is all over you," said Wallace, who became the first Australian to take kayak gold in Beijing.

Osypenko-Radomska won the women's race in a time of 1:50.673 minutes with Sydney gold medallist Josefa Idem of Italy taking silver. Germany's Katrin Wagner-Augustin claimed bronze.
