Brazil exported 5.16
billion litres of ethanol last year, the government said Friday, dpa reported.
More than half the fuel produced from sugar, or 2.8 billion litres, was
delivered to the United States, the energy and mining ministry said. The US and
Brazil are the world's largest producers of the fuel, but in the US ethanol is made from maize.
The average price of Brazilian ethanol was 47 US cents per litre.
The fuel has been praised as better for the environment than oil, but has come
under criticism for contributing to rising food prices worldwide.
