Fivefold increase in Uzbek foreign trade red ink

In January-March 2010, red ink in Uzbekistan's foreign trade grew by 5.2 times to $1.812 billion compared to the same period in 2009, the Uzbek State Statistics Agency reported.

The country's foreign trade turnover in January-March fell by 4.4 percent to $4.321 billion, with imports falling by 29.8 percent to $1.620 billion.

Foreign trade turnover with countries outside the CIS increased by 20 percent to $2.922 billion and dropped with CIS countries by 32.8 percent to $1.399 billion.

Exports to countries outside the CIS grew by 81.1 percent to $1.933 billion and fell to CIS countries by 33 percent to $767.8 million. Imports from CIS countries decreased by 32.7 percent to $631.3 million and from other countries by 27.7 percent to $988.8 million.

In 2009, red ink in Uzbekistan's foreign trade declined by 42.7 percent to $2.333 billion compared to 2008. The country's foreign trade turnover grew by 0.1 percent to $21.21, including an increase in the export volume by 2.4 percent to $11.771 billion.
