Azerbaijan, Baku, July 16 /Trend A.Akhundov/

Greater Baku Regional Development Plan project envisages the construction of a new international airport near the capital of the country. Currently the project is being discussed by relevant governmental bodies.

Its final draft covering the period up to 2030, will be approved in next several months.

The new airport is proposed to be constructed to the South from the Alat village, the Head of the Project Management Group Novruz Eldarli told Trend on Monday.

Alat will be a logistical, trade and oil-gas centre of Azerbaijan in the future. The geographical location of the village is favourable for the main transport lines of the country to cross through it.

Currently, an international trade port is being constructed in this territory and an oil and gas processing complex will be created in Sangachal settlement in the future and the production of oil and chemical products will be launched.

The region possesses great opportunities for the creation of enterprises producing construction materials, as well as for development of food and textile industry, fishing and other.

"We offer to turn Alat to a modern, dynamically developing satellite-city of Baku,"- Eldarli said.

Moreover, the realization of plans on creation of artificial Khazar Islands near Alat, as well as on creation of residential and entertainment complexes in these territories, will give impetus to the development of tourism in this area.

Thus, the development of this zone actualizes the issue of construction of a new international airport, as the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, which is active, is located 100 kilometres from it, which is far enough.
