The State Oil Company of Azerbaijani Republic (SOCAR) commissioned a new well on the Oil Rocks -1887 platform on the Oil Rocks field which is developed independently, SOCAR said.
The well has a daily debit of 34 tons of oil with the depth of 2,440 meters.
SOCAR plans to put into exploitation 6 wells more enabling to increase the daily debit to 570 tons of oil compared to current 480 tons of oil a day.
Oil Rocks-1887 operates since 2006. About 18 wells were drilled on the platform during the last three years and 14 of 18 wells are under exploitation.
SOCAR plans to increase debit of the platform to 1,000 tons of oil per day.
The Oil Rocks field is the first where Azerbaijan has begun offshore oil production. It is planned to drill 21 wells on the field in 2009.
Drilling new wells is carried out under the Azerbaijani President's orders on increase of the Oil Rocks oil and gas production unit (OGPU) from 812,000 tons of oil up to 1.2 million tons (1.5 times). According to estimates of SOCAR geologists, the residual volume of oil at the Oil Rocks is 30 million tons. SOCAR will drill 78 new wells to increase oil production at the field by late 2010.
