Kazakh Environment Minister Nurlan Kapparov discussed prospects of shale gas production in Kazakhstan with representatives of U.S. Energy Ministry, Kazinform reported with reference to Kazakhstan's Embassy in the U.S.

Earlier Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Massimov ordered to accelerate shale gas exploration at large coal deposits in the country.

"We should find the resources and carry out exploration work of shale gas at our coal fields as soon as possible," Massimov said.

Massimov said that the Kazakh government is ready to allocate money for shale gas development to accelerate its production but need some experienced partners for its development.

The U.S. is one of the world's leading manufacturers of shale gas. Shale gas makes up roughly 37 percent of annual gas consumption in the U.S.

Moreover, Kazakh Environment Minister and U.S. Energy Ministry agreed to continue cooperation in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency within the framework of the Joint Kazakh-American Commission on Energy Partnership.

Kazakh delegation headed by Environment Minister Nurlan Kapparov realized a working visit to Washington.

The visit was aimed at promotion of Kazakhstan's "Green Bridge" program, which will be included in the agenda at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro this summer.

Within the visit Kapparov met with U.S. Energy Deputy Secretary Daniel Poneman, the leadership of the U.S. State Department, World Bank, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, USAID, and with representatives of some non-government organizations.
