Construction of a new terminal of the Kutaisi International Airport in Georgia will be completed in 2019 instead of 2020, said the representatives of the Georgia Airports Association (GAA), Trend reports via Georgian media outlets.
The construction of the terminal is currently in active phase.
Meanwhile, the waterproofing of the facade and roof of the new passenger terminal of Kutaisi International Airport has been completed, a green roof is being installed, engineering communications and internal partitions are being conducted in parallel.
Kutaisi International Airport currently serves 300 passengers per hour. After the construction of a new passenger terminal, the airport will have 7 exits and will be able to serve 1,200 passengers per hour without interruption. This will increase the capacity of the airport four times.
According to the Georgia Airports Association, the construction phase of airport's new terminal buildings will begin at a later stage. This will result in the merge of both terminals.
The design of the upgraded terminal of the Kutaisi International Airport is handled by the Dutch architectural company UNStudio. An analysis of the development of the airport was prepared by IATA Consulting, which determined all the standards that the airport should satisfy.
According to the results of nine months of 2019, the passenger traffic at Kutaisi International Airport increased by 39.79 percent. In total, 629,618 passengers were transported - increase of 179,201 passengers compared the same period of 2018.
Kutaisi International Airport is fully operated by United Airports of Georgia. The airport was rebuilt in 2012 and is the first international airport in the region, offering cost-efficient airline services.
Kutaisi Airport is located within 200 kilometers from Tbilisi.
