Turkey congratulates Palestine on UN statehood vote

Arab World Materials 30 November 2012 11:22 (UTC +04:00)
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has become the first world leader to congratulate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as the 193-nation UN General Assembly overwhelmingly approved the de facto recognition of the sovereign state of Palestine on Thursday Today`s Zaman reported.

Prime Ministry sources said Erdogan called Abbas following the voting at the UN and said he congratulates all Palestinians on statehood. Erdogan told Abbas that Turkey will continue to stand by Palestinians in their rightful cause in the upcoming period.

There were 138 votes in favor, nine against and 41 abstentions. Three countries did not take part in the vote, held on the 65th anniversary of the adoption of UN resolution 181 that partitioned Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states.

Thousands of flag-waving Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip set off fireworks and danced in the streets to celebrate the vote.

Granting Palestinians the title of "non-member observer state" falls short of full U.N. membership - something the Palestinians failed to achieve last year. But it does have important legal implications - it would allow them access to the ICC and other international bodies, should they choose to join.

Abbas thanked Turkey and the Turkish people for their support in the process of lobbying in recognition of the Palestinian state.
