Afghan troops on Wednesday backed by the U.S. -led Coalition forces killed 10 insurgents and detained two suspects in a battle that erupted during a patrol in Logar province, some 60 km south from Afghan capital Kabul, said a Coalition statement, Xinhua reported.

The combined forces patrolled to a village in Baraki Barak district where intelligence sources had indicated Taliban operatives were gathered while they encountered enemy forces en route to the targeted compounds, the statement said.

It added that an estimated 10 insurgents were killed during the battle and two suspects were arrested as the combined forces searched the targeted compounds.

"Enemy weapons, RPGs and grenades recovered when the battle ended were destroyed a safe distance from civilians," it noted.

Conflicts and violence have claimed the lives of over 5,000 in 2008 while Taliban insurgents whose regime toppled in late 2001 have vowed to intensify their activities against Afghan and international troops in the war-torn country in 2009.
