Crew of vessel that wrecked on Caspian Sea feels fine, says captain

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 17 / Trend , S.Aliyev/ "Crew of dry-cargo vessel Sarmat-1, which wrecked in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, feels fine. There are no victims," captain Vasiliy Lagutin said on Dec. 17.

The crew of the ship met with representatives of the Russian Embassy in Baku.

"Now water is being pumped out from the steering compartment, after which the vessel will be examined and the damage will be assessed. Then the ship will be repaired," said Lagutin, adding that the cargo had not been damaged.

Azerbaijan has providing necessary assistance to the crew and all facilities for repair.

"All actions of the captain and the crew were adequate to the emergency situation. Azerbaijani specialists will render full assistance to repair," said Deputy Chief of the Azerbaijan State Maritime Administration Namig Agamaliyev.

Russian dry-cargo vessel Sarmat-1 arrived in Baku on Dec. 16.

Sarmat-1 was sailing from Russian Astrakhan Iranian Anzali loaded with metal products and lumber (1,750 tons). Steering machine went down on the ship because of a storm.

The crew of the vessel includes 11 members. No victims have been reported.
