By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Welding activities as part of the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) project are progressing well, with the speed of automatic welding significantly increased, ICGB AD, the project company told Trend.

“The teams of the EPC contractor have now reached 40 to 50 automatic welds on a daily basis. Given the geographic difficulties of the route, some sections of the pipeline allow only manual welds, so that process is also ongoing. In early November the welded section of the pipeline reached 70 km,” said the company.

“Trenching and lowering of the welded pipes have already begun and nearly 30 km are now ready. Teams on site continue carrying out safety, quality and compliance testing to ensure the interconnector is completed in accordance with the highest industry standards.”

IGB project envisages the construction of a gas interconnector that will link the gas transmission systems of Greece and Bulgaria. The total length of the gas pipeline is 182.6 km, and its capacity for gas transmission is 3 billion cubic meters per year with the option to reach 5 billion cubic meters.

The route of the gas pipeline is divided into 7 main lots, the shortest being 9.55 km long and the longest - 71.90 km. 106 km of the route in Bulgaria will be completed with automatic welding, and the remaining 45 km - by manual welding.
