The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) said Wednesday it would allocate 5 million dollars for emergency aid to assist tens of thousands of people fleeing Libya's violence, dpa reported.
Around half the money will go to set up two fully equipped field hospitals on the Tunisian and Egyptian sides of Libya's borders. Currently, there are only makeshift hospitals at the borders.
The Saudi-based OIC said it would also equip the Egyptian side with five ambulances to transport critical cases and that 10 ambulances would be sent to the Tunisian border with Libya.
The relief money will also be spent to set up temporary shelters to accommodate 10,000 people and purchase necessary food items such as flour, sugar, rice, canned food and infant formula, said the OIC.
The announcement by the OIC, which had earlier condemned the violence in Libya as contrary to Islamic values, comes on the heels of a statement by the United Nations Refugee Agency that the situation at the borders was reaching a "crisis point."
The UNHCR had earlier called on the international community to provide substantial humanitarian support for Tunisia and Egypt, as both countries struggle to deal with tens of thousands of people fleeing Libya.
