The death toll following Friday's massive earthquake in Japan has climbed to more than 3,200, according to the national police agency, dpa reported.
However, given the high number of missing, local officials say they expect the final death toll to climb higher still.
Authorities have now identified 1,597 victims of the quake. Of those, 1,481 are officially considered missing. The number does not include 200 to 300 victims who were found off the coast of Miyagi prefecture.
The prefecture's police chief warned that the number of victims would likely rise as there remains no contact with more than 10,000 of the region's residents.
