Britain hails Bin Laden death as "massive step forward"

British Prime Minister David Cameron Monday described the death of Osama bin Laden as a "massive step forward" but warned of possible retaliation, DPA reported.

In a televised statement from Chequers, his country seat, Cameron said news of the death would bring "great relief."

However, it would be necessary to be "particularly vigilant" about the risk of retaliatory terror attacks.

Forerign Secretary William Hague, who was travelling to Cairo Monday, said the death of the al-Qaeda leader "mattered enormously."

The death of Bin Laden was a "very serious blow" to the international terrorism network. But the world needed to be "vigilant" as al-Qaeda was likely to "want to show that it can still operate."

He had advised British embassies around the world to review and increase security.

Asked in a BBC interview whether he was surprised that Bin Laden was captured in Pakistan, he said: "I'm not surprised by anything any more."
