An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred on Wednesday in the eastern part of Indonesia, Sputnik reported.

The epicenter of the quake was located 86 kilometers (53 miles) north-east of the town of Saumlaki in the Maluku province, at a depth of ten kilometers under the Banda Se in the Maluku Islands.

There have been neither immediate reports of damages or casualties, nor a tsunami threat.

Indonesia is a part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and eruptions are frequent due to intense seismic activity. A 5.9-magnitude earthquake near Java in 2006 claimed the lives of 6,500 people, with up to 80 percent of the buildings in the town of Bantul being destroyed.
