On Sept.15, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili participated in the opening ceremony of the newly restored synagogue in Tbilisi. "This synagogue is a symbol of the Jewish trace and its presence in Georgia's history," the president said, speaking in the synagogue before the faithful.

Saakashvili said 'today is a beautiful day in Tbilisi, as the second synagogue was restored. "I also want to note that, although the Jews left the Racha region long ago, local Georgians keep the tradition and take care of the local synagogue with love and respect, and it is very important, because small number of people retained the respect and love for the Jews," Saakashvili said.

At present, the Georgian ideology meets the ideology of the time of King David the Builder, when there did not exist the people chosen on religious grounds in Georgia, Saakashvili said.

Guests from all over the world attended the opening ceremony of the synagogue in Tbilisi. The synagogue was restored within two years. The World Jewish Congress financed its rehabilitation.
