Romania is optimistic about the future of the Nabucco gas pipeline project, Romanian Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Azerbaijan, NATO representative in the country, Nicolae Ureki said during a meeting organized by the Centre for Strategic Studies under Azerbaijan's President within regularly scheduled meetings with the ambassadors. The Nabucco project envisages gas transportation from the Caspian region and the Middle East to EU.
"Nabucco a very important project for us - as an alternative source of gas," - Ureki said.
According to Ureki,funding of this project is serious problem in its implementation. Ureki said several banks expressed their desire to fund the project.
Romanian company Transgaz is one of the six shareholders of the Nabucco project worth €7.9 billion. Construction of the pipeline is scheduled for 2011, the first deliveries will begin in 2014. Maximum capacity of the pipeline will amount to 31 billion cubic meters a year. Other participants in the project are Austrian OMV, Hungarian MOL, Bulgarian Bulgargaz, Turkish Botas and German RWE companies. Each of participants has equal share to the amount of 16.67 percent.
