Investments in rail cargo transportation in Kazakhstan decrease in 1Q2024

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, May 6. The volume of investments in fixed capital in the field of railway cargo transportation amounted to 28.5 billion tenge (about $64.2 million) from January through March 2024, Trend reports.

According to data from the country's Bureau of National Statistics, compared to the same period in 2023, the volume of investments decreased by 49.3 percent.

In the field of railway cargo transportation, the largest volume of investments was recorded in Astana - 21.5 billion tenge (about $48.4 million). The three leading regions also included Almaty and Kyzylorda.

Meanwhile, cargo transportation by rail from January through March 2024 amounted to 96.9 million tons, which is 3.5 percent less than for the same period in 2023.

Cargo turnover in the first quarter of 2024 decreased by 7.4 percent and amounted to 75.9 billion tons-kilometers.

Furthermore, the volume of cargo transportation by rail in Kazakhstan amounted to 416.4 million tons from January through December 2023. This is 2.8 percent more than from January through December 2022.

At the same time, cargo turnover by rail for the above period amounted to 326.8 billion ton-kilometers, which is 4.8 percent more than in the same period in 2022.
