Number of AIDS infected people increases in Iran

The number of AIDS infected through sexual contact increased in Iran, Iranian news channel IRINN reported.

"According to the latest statistics of the Iranian Ministry of Health, roughly 20,975 people became AIDS infected in Iran till March 21, 2010. This figure hit 20,130 in December 2009," a message said.

According to the statistics, roughly 75 percent infected of these 20,975 people were infected through drug use, 17.9 percent - through sexual contact. This percentage hit 76.6 and 13.3, respectively in December 2009.

These figures show that the number of AIDS infected people through sexual contact increased by five percent.

The Iranian Committee to Combat AIDS warned about the increasing number of HIV infections through sexual contact. According to the committee, there are 83,000-120,000 HIV-infected. Roughly 21,000 HIV-infected were revealed. Roughly 3,624 infected people died in Iran till March 2010.

AIDS is one of the rare diseases hidden due to the mentality and religious reasons. People are not informed about spreading of the virus. In this regard, the number of HIV-infected people has recently increased in the country.
