Gurbanmurat Mezilov has been approved as the President of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan (AST) at the decree issued by Turkmen President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov. He was elected at the decision of General Assembly of academicians.
Mezilov was acting president of the AST since June, 2009. Before, he was the rector of the Turkmenistan State Pedagogical Institute.
Berdimuhammedov made a decision to restore the Academy of Sciences, which broke up during the country's previous leadership. Moreover, he returned back to force the obligatory 10-year education at secondary schools and 5-year at universities.
Berdimuhammedov also signed several decrees to appoint directors of several scientific institutes of the AST, including physics and mathematical, seismology, history, archeology and ethnography, botanic, medicine plants, chemistry, sun energy, language and literature and the institute of manuscripts.
