Uzbekistan reduces cotton fiber production by 2.7 percent in first quarter

According to the Uzbek State Statistics Committee, the country reduced cotton fiber production by 2.7 percent in January-March to 390,018 tons compared to the same period in 2010.

Cotton yarn production during the period fell by 20.8 percent to 36,370 tons, with cotton fabric production dropping by 11.5 percent to 19.537 million square meters.

Cotton fiber production in Uzbekistan increased by 7.5 percent last year to 1.125 million tons compared to the same period in 2009, with cotton yarn production jumping by 19.6 percent to 185,752 tons. Cotton fabric output declined by 0.7 percent to 83.597 million square meters.

Uzbekistan ranks sixth globally for cotton fiber production and third for cotton fiber export.

The country produces 3.5 million tons of raw cotton and 1-1.2 million tons of cotton fiber per year.
