The World Bank (WB) intends to allocate $500 million for the development of animal husbandry in Kazakhstan, the Kazakh media cited WB Country Manager for Kazakhstan Ato Brown as saying.
“These funds will probably be used over the next five years,” Brown added at a round table in Astana.
"Everything depends on the country’s potential,” he said. “We would like to understand how to effectively use your available resources and to make sure that your subsidy system is effective for rendering state services."
WB is ready to finance the construction of modern slaughterhouses and render technical support. The final loan amount, terms and purpose will be determined after proposals from the government are discussed.
“It will be possible to thoroughly talk about this when Kazakhstan puts forward its proposals on the required financial and technical support,” Brown said. “Then we will be able to design a good program for you.”
"We are open to your proposals for prices,” he said. “We can finance as much as the country needs. The final amount may change at the request of the country. We would like to start slow, finance the system. But if suddenly the sector has additional needs, we are ready to provide additional funding.”
“We issue loans for 15 years at 4 percent per annum, primarily for the import of livestock,” Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture Umirzak Shukeyev said.
“Kazakhstan's livestock breeders also need help with improving the veterinary system,” Maksut Baktibayev, head of the Meat Union, said.
"We can use the system of Uruguay, Australia or Argentina and adapt, saving time," he said.
