ASTANA, Kazakhstan, August 1. Kazakhstan's Kazatomprom Group (the national atomic company) produced 10,857 tons of uranium on a 100 percent basis from January through June 2024, which is 6 percent higher than the same period in 2023 (10,225 tons), Trend reports.
According to Kazatomprom, the increase in production is associated with a slight boost in the production plan for the year and the second quarter of 2024 in accordance with obligations under subsoil use contracts for 2024.
The increase in planned production volumes was also due to the restoration of drilling volumes in 2023 and the company's efforts to achieve planned production rates.
At the same time, the volume of uranium production (on an attributable basis) amounted to 5,797 tons, which is 7 percent more than in the first half of 2023 (5,411 tons).
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan's Kazatomprom Group's uranium production in 2023 amounted to 21,112 tons, which is 1 percent lower than the same period in 2022 (21,227 tons). In the fourth quarter of 2023, production amounted to 5,795 tons. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2022, production volume remained unchanged (5,780 tons).
In addition, Kazakhstan ranks second in the world in terms of proven natural uranium reserves. The Republic of Kazakhstan's depths contain approximately 14 percent of all proven world reserves. The country's total proven uranium reserves are expected to exceed 700,000 tons.
Kazakhstan surpassed the US in uranium production in 2009 and continues to dominate the global market. Kazakhstan accounts for almost 40 percent of global uranium output.
