The Japanese Kubota Corporation has signed a contract with the Uzbek Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources to reconstruct three pumping stations in the Ferghana Valley in Uzbekistan, the ministry told Trend on Friday.
Spokesman for the ministry said the Japanese corporation won the tender for the turnkey reconstruction of three pumping stations by replacing units, announced in mid-2012. The total project cost for reconstructing three pumping stations is $34.2 million. The project is planned to be completed by 2015.
The contract will be financed by a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to the amount of $100 million, given in late 2009 for a project to improve land conditions in the Andijan, Namangan and Ferghana areas. The Uzbek government will allocate $44 million from the state budget to implement the project.
It is planned to modernise eight pumping stations, 150 kilometres of a water main, as well as rehabilitate the irrigated area in the Zarafshan River Basin and areas of the Fergana Valley within the project worth $ 144 million.
The project's implementation will ensure the stable development of agriculture in the 60,000 hectare, irrigated land area.
Uzbekistan joined the ADB in 1995. During this time, the bank approved loans for 35 joint projects in education and healthcare, modernisation of generating capacity and energy, rail and road infrastructures, public utilities, agriculture, financial sector with a total project cost of more than $8.6 billion with the ADB share of financing standing at more than $3.8 billion.
