Irish singer Chris de Burgh is scheduled to perform a concert in Tehran in late November, the website of the Iranian Press TV network reported Monday. ( dpa )
It would be the first concert by a Western pop singer since the 1979 Islamic revolution and the clergy reign in Iran.
Press TV quoted Iranian music producer Majid Roqani as saying that the concert - together with the Iranian band Arian - would be held in the last week of November at the Azadi indoor stadium in western Tehran.
Roqani added that de Burgh would give a 40-minute show of his own songs and another 30-minute show together with the Arian band.
The concert needs special permission by the ministry of Islamic culture and guidance which is currently dominated by ultra- conservative officials affiliated to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's administration.
Roqani did not say whether he has already obtained the obligatory permission from the local cultural watchdog.
Arian and de Burgh have already recorded a new version of his "The Words I Love You" title which is also on the latest album of the Iranian group.
Arian is the most successful pop group in Iran, and its concerts abroad have also found a wide resonance among Iranian expatriates.
The Irish singer was in Tehran last May and inspected the technical facilities of the probable concert venues.
The Azadi indoor stadium has a capacity of 12,000 and - if the concert gets the go-ahead - is expected to be fully sold-out.
The concert is planned by Iranian record production company Taraneh Sharqi (Oriental Melody) headed by Roqani.
The Irishman is one of the most popular Western singers in Iran and almost all his albums are available throughout the country.
Western music in general and de Burgh's albums are illegally available as pirated copies in the Iranian black market at a price of 1 dollar (65 euro cents).
De Burgh said that he was aware of the pirated copies of his albums and their low price and added that although he was happy his music was being heard in Iran he was bothered by the pirated copies.
